Tour Belarus and experience a country that has bent like a tiny sapling in a stormy wind only to rear up strong and firm when the clouds parted. Belarus, which translates to “White Russia” has been conquered many times by foreign invaders; however its people are resilient and have proudly managed to keep a hold of their warm and hospitable nature no matter the circumstances. While its capital of Minsk was almost completely destroyed during WW II, it has been gloriously rebuilt to include wide streets, large parks, and captivating architecture.
There are several monuments within the boundaries of
Minsk that are worth exploring including: Victory Square which
is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) and features
a 40 m tall obelisk. The Island of Tears is a monument located
in Old Town in memory of the “Sons of Belarus who died beyond
the bounds of the country in the Afghanistan war”. The Troetskoe
Predmestie is one of the few historical sections of Minsk that
survived its upheaval and is one of the most enchanting sections
of the city with plenty of shops, cafes and stunning
architecture. Saint Spirit Cathedral is another crowning
landmark in the city that features a host of sacred orthodox
icons. In addition to these great sights you can visit Holy
Trinity Cathedral and St. Catherine’s Church that feature
architectural monuments of the 17th century.
Just outside of Minsk is an architectural marvel at Nesvizh. This Park and Palace is the former residence of the famous “Radzivills” family who began as powerful medieval Belarusian magnates. It’s beautiful park and palace along with the neighboring Church of Corpus Christi (built in the VI century) is one of the most impressive sights in all of Belarus. Not far away is Mir Castle which was founded in the early VI century as well. Both locations have been deemed UNESCO world heritage sights.
Another area that is a must-see for all who venture by
way of Minsk is the village of Dudutki that houses a
fantastic open-air museum where VIIII century Belarusian
country life comes to life. Traditional activities such as
pottery, baking, carpentry, and handcraft making are on
display for your viewing pleasure. You can even wander over
to a working farm as it was over a century ago. Walk through
history, ride a horse or take a break for some homemade
cheeses, bread or dranik made from traditional recipes.
Although Minsk offers numerous sights to see, there are more
than several towns throughout the rest of Belarus that
deserve special mention. At the western point of the
Republic lies the town of “Grodno” that is considered to be
one of the most delightful of Belarusian cities. With
numerous tourist attractions, cathedrals, churches, museums,
theaters, and other places of interest, you’ll have a ball
exploring all the nooks and crannies of this wondrous town.
Aside from all these superb excursions, Belarus offers up an entire host of sights that highlight the Jewish culture as well. If you are of the Jewish faith, we can escort you to the deeply moving Yama monument, the Minsk Synagogue and Yeshiva, the first Belarusian stone synagogue in Brest, Pravednikov Lane; an entire street dedicated to the memory and lives of the “righteous” who risked their lives to save Jews during WW ll and much more.
These are just a few examples of what Belarus has to offer.
