Tour Germany and experience a country, whose traditional customs and practices are still very much alive. Its history and medieval spirit buck up against a backdrop of sleek modern cities and cutting-edge industrialism. Renowned for its hospitality and enjoyment of the good things in life, Germany promises you a warm welcome wherever you go, from the charm of an idyllic village to the rich and diverse countryside. Brimming with cultural events and legends of times long past, Germany is one of the most diverse countries in all of Europe.
No mention of a tour of Germany can be complete without first mentioning its capital city of Berlin. This is a city that is constantly reinventing itself and a shining instance of how diverse lifestyles and cultures can coexist in harmony. Although Berlin appeals mainly to those seeking a modern experience, there are still plenty of interesting historical sights tucked amid the 21st century city such as the Brandenburg Gate, Bebelplatz, Unter den Linden, Museum Island, Kulturforum, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtniskirche and much, much more.
Koln (Cologne) was originally founded by the Romans as Colonia
Agrippina and is one of the oldest cities in Germany. A
special highlight includes the Cathedral of Cologne, one of
the countries most important architectural monuments and the
third tallest cathedral in the world. It took over 600 years
to construct this gothic magnum opus, and when it was
completed in 1880, it was still true to the original conceived
plans from 1248. Another example of Germany’s distant past
lies on the banks of the Moselle River. Trier is actually
Germany’s oldest city, which was founded as a Roman colony in
16 B.C. Vivid highlights of its historical past can be felt
through a number of interesting sights which include: the
Porta Nigra, the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps,
and the Cathedral of Trier, which houses a holy relic that
draws many pilgrims: the Holy Robe, the garment said to be
worn by Jesus at the crucifixion.
For a different kind of experience, the Hofbräuhaus in Munich
is the most famous beer hall in the world. Settle in for some
giant pretzels and beer served in one-liter glasses at this
Bavarian institution that has been in place since 1589. If
sampling the heavy beer of Germany doesn’t peak your interest,
how about a walk through the Berchtesgaden National Park? This
particular area is an alpine paradise of abundant forests,
steep rock faces, crystal clear lakes, delightful villages and
rolling meadows or take in the Wine Route or the German Clock
Road which traces the history of the cuckoo clock in the Black
Forest.
While every city in Germany has something to offer, there
are some magnificent spots throughout its borders that really
illustrate the heart of Deutschland. Rising from the Bavarian
woods like a fairytale castle behind magnificent mountain
scenery and the shores of the Schwansee (Swan Lake),
Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) was the model
for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. King Ludwig II
designed this abode in 1869 with the help of a theatrical set
designer rather than an architect. Have your camera handy for
this most photographed building in Germany.
When thinking of Germany’s incredible historic landscape, one
cannot neglect to mention the Romantic Road, which is one of
the best scenic routes the country has to offer. This route
winds though a region that boasts exemplary scenery and
culture from charming medieval towns enclosed by walls and
sprouting towers to half-timbered houses and castles. Stay in
a cozy historic hotel for a few days and take in the
highlights this area has to offer including Rothenburg ob der
Tauber, a prime preserved medieval town.
These are just a few examples of what Germany has to offer.
