From cities and towns full of historic monuments to wonderful retreats in a pristine natural environment filled with dense forests, meandering rivers and a lush countryside; Lithuania has something for everyone. Wander down the cobbled streets of its capital city of Vilnius where church domes and spires fill the landscape. Vilnius is a UNESCO World Heritage location and has one of the best-preserved old towns in all of Eastern Europe. Filled with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, Vilnius will treat you to narrow medieval streets, secluded courtyards, town castles and fortifications along with an incredible amount of churches that reflect the city’s rich and vibrant history. Some of the more interesting sights include: St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Gediminas Castle, Cathedral Square, St. Stanislaw Cathedral, St. Ann and Bernardines’ Church, Amber gallery-museum and Užupis -one of the oldest districts of Vilnius that is mentioned in the historical sources as far back as the XVI century. The maze of streets and courtyards provide countless hours of exploration possibilities and visitors who wish to shop, dine and be entertained can look forward to a whole host of establishments from which to choose.
To the west of Vilnius and not too far of a jaunt, is the
lovely Kaunas. Making the trek is worth it for a glimpse of its grand
religious sights and other attractions such as Napoleon's Hill,
the archaic House of Perkunas and the awe-inspiring Hill of
Crosses.
Tour Trakai and experience the ancient capital of the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania that lies cozily nestled amongst picturesque
lakes. Trakai is best known for its fascinating XIV century
fairytale castle on a small island on Lake Galvė, which now
houses a museum. Aside of exploring the Gothic red brick castle,
the town of Trakai itself, with its quaint architecture is
well-worth wandering around. There are ample options for
enjoyment on the placid waters of the surrounding lakes as well.
To top things off, the quaint towns of Klaipeda and
Palanga are both worth a stop. Dominated by the influence of
the old German culture, Klaipeda with its well-reconstructed
medieval quarter is best explored on foot. Stop in at
Klaipeda Castle and meander around its modern museum that
displays highlights of Klaipeda’s former city life and its
magnificent castle. When you are filled to the brim with the
charms of everything Klaipeda has to offer, skip over to
nearby Palanga for a quick tour and take in this little gem
of a town along with a stop at the Palanga Botanical Park
and Amber Museum. A stone’s throw away from the port town of
Klaipeda is the incredible Curonian Spit. This thrilling
piece of land hanging off western Lithuania hosts some of
the worlds’ most precious beaches along with an incredible
array of wildlife. Sink your toes into the sand dunes or
have a picnic on this UNESCO recognized world heritage
sight.
