Visit Russia and discover a country whose historic past stretches from the Imperial to the Communist and everything in between. St. Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and is the cultural capital of Russia. Known as the “Venice of the North”, this city boasts a huge array of fascinating and important historical sights. It would be difficult to condense all the amazing points of interest in the immediate area however, starting with the enthralling city itself, the remarkable St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Palace Square, Peter & Paul’s Fortress and Cathedral, the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood bear special mention.
Slightly further a field, you’ll find yourself submerged by the historic remnants of Russia’s glorious Imperial past. A day trip to Pushkin (formally Tsarskoye Selo) where you can see Alexander Palace will do just that. This was the last known residence of Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra and a majestic neo-classical backdrop for many events throughout world history. Following your tour of the Alexander, a stop at nearby Catherine Palace would further steep your senses in the Russian Imperial Age. This palace was once the residence of Catherine the Great and is most famous for its “Amber Room” which was dubbed the 8th wonder of the world. How about exploring a massive park ornamented with fountains, pavilions and statues? You can see all this and more at the Grand Palace and Park of Peterhof as its grounds feature 3 major cascades and over 140 fountains. Finally, a relaxing evening boat trip along the Neva would be the perfect end to a day filled with new discoveries as you take in Russia’s famous “White Nights” from the water.
Of course, no tour of St. Petersburg would be complete
without stopping by the Hermitage Museum that houses one of
the largest and most significant art collections in the
world. Also included is a visit to the Winter Palace and
state residences of the former Emperors, which is a part of
the Hermitage as well.
While it can be said that St. Petersburg is the soul of
Russia, Moscow is certainly its heart. The capital of Russia
houses the famous Kremlin; an immense fortified structure
and the official residence of the President. No visit to
Moscow would be complete without a tour of its Red Square,
one of the most famous plazas in the world. You’ll want to
have your camera ready at the magnificent St. Basil's
Cathedral, which is ornately colorful and known for its
onion-shaped domes. Keep you camera handy for some snap
shots of the incredible Alexander Garden, the Church of
Christ the Savior and the Novodevichy Convent too.
Explore the ancient kingdoms with a historical tour of some
of the locations that form the enchanting “Golden
Ring”…Vladimir, Suzdal and Rostov. These “open air” museum
type settings will leave you with the deepest sense of what
Russia’s orthodox past is all about. At the end of the day
and for a truly unique experience, we can reserve a table at
the Red Square Restaurant whose menu is compiled of various
ancient Russian recipes allegedly recovered by the chef in
the historical archives of Moscow or take in the experience
of dining at a typical Russian wooden “dacha” where the
staff are dressed in folkloric flare. Finally, to top off
your visit to this remarkable and ever-changing country, a
ballet, opera or theater performance would certainly add the
icing on the cake.
Aside from all these superb excursions, Russia offers up
an entire host of sights that highlight the Jewish culture
as well. If you are of the Jewish faith, we can escort you
to the Jewish Cultural Center in Moscow, the Berl Lazar
Center in Marina Roscha, the new Jewish Community Center
designed by a well known Israeli architect, the Poklonnaya
Gora WW ll memorial, the Grand Choral Synagogue and new
Yesod Jewish Center in St. Petersburg, the Formula of Sorrow
memorial in Pushkin and much more.
These are just a few examples of what Russia has to
