Tour Slovakia and experience a truly authentic country filled with time honored traditions and a diverse landscape featuring timeless villages, majestic mountains, ancient castles, wooden churches and wondrous portraits of nature. Present day Slovakians are descended from Slavic peoples who settled the Danube river basin in the 6th and 7th centuries before Christ. Although under the influence of cultural repression for centuries, the people of this delightful land held fast to their identities in a number of ways including various folk art and crafts such as wood carving, weaving, and glass painting along with vibrantly colored architecture found throughout the country.
Quaint and cheery with a rich cultural life, Bratislava; Slovakia’s capital city, offers much to discover. As the most dominating feature in the old part of the city, Bratislava Castle features a number of windows through which to enjoy magnificent views. It is also host to a number of museums that showcase an entire array of items from Slovakia’s history including antique furnishings and clocks, weaponry and centuries old portraits of prominent individuals. Take a stroll through old town and breath in the exquisitely aged atmosphere through sights like Bratislava’s foremost Gothic structure, the 13th century St. Martin’s Cathedral or the Primatial Palace with its pale pink and white exterior and lifelike marble statues. Although this palace was originally built for the archbishop in 1778 and accommodates all the opulent features one would expect in such an abode, it also houses an ornate “Hall of Mirrors”. While smaller than the better-known version in Versailles, this hall is still an impressive spectacle. If you’re hungry or in need of some tourist trinkets, the quaint St. Michael’s Street is one of the more popular spots for just such an occasion. Stop in for an authentic Slovak meal or make the trip just to see St. Michael’s Gate, the only preserved gate of the medieval city fortifications.
Not far from Bratislava proper and above the convergence
of the Danube and Morava rivers lies one of the three oldest
castles in all of Slovakia; Devin Castle. This structure
holds the title of being one of the country’s most
significant historical attractions. Among other things,
during the infancy of Christianity, patron saints Cyril and
Methodius began their epic missionary work here in 863 AD.
It was also a major seat of the greater Moravian Empire and
has a vivid medieval history in general.
Trenčín castle in the town of Trenčín dominates a limestone
cliff above Old Town and offers panoramic views of the Váh
River plain. Aside of the obvious perks of visiting the
castle itself, one can also view the “Well of Love” which
was allegedly dug by a man attempting to win his love back
from servitude in the castle. There is also a famous Roman
inscription nearby which, when translated reads: “To the
victory of the emperor and the army which, numbering 855
soldiers, resided at Laugaricio. By order of Maximianus,
legate of the 2nd auxiliary legion”. In the town of Bojnice
lies perhaps the most famous of all castles in Slovakia.
Standing on a travertine hill above the town, this
historical gem looks as if it was inspired by an
illustration in a book of fairy tales and was dubbed a
natural cultural monument in 1970.
The old medieval mining town of Banská Štiavnica with its
renaissance palaces, 16th-century churches, elegant squares
and castles along with the wooden churches of the province
of Bardejov fall under the auspices of UNESCO. These unique
folk architectural highlights stand in a number of villages
including Zboj, Mikulasova, Hervatov, Krive, Lukov, Kozany,
Trocany and Jedlinka; all within a mere 20 km radius.
For the nature lover, the High Tatras are a magnificent
range of mountains sprinkled with villages that harbor deep
peasant traditions. The area is host to over 500 peaks and
35 valleys with meandering brooks, serene waterfalls, lush
meadows and crystal clear waters. Breathtaking views abound
in this, the most important nature preserve in Slovakia.
Aside from all these superb excursions, Slovakia offers up an entire host of sights that highlight the Jewish culture as well. If you are of the Jewish faith, we can escort you to Bratislava’s Museum of Jewish Culture, the Chatam Sofer Memorial, the Stupava, Malacky and Bratislava Synagogue’s, the town of Zvolen and its nearby park of generous souls, the Jewish Communal Compound in Komarno, the historically relevant city of Nitra, the Jewish cemetery in Sered and much more.
